Indian star cricketers Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah may not join the Indian team for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka later in the month of July. According to a PTI report, the Indian cricket board has decided to give the T20 World Cup-winning captain and the other two senior players additional rest. All-rounder Hardik Pandya or wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul can be given the captaincy reigns of the team for the ODIs.

Rohit, Kohli and Bumrah, all of whom had big parts to play along with others in India’s triumphant T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, are expected to return for a busy season in September, starting with Bangladesh's visit to India for two Tests and three T20Is beginning on September 19.

Rohit, Kohli To Prioritise Test Cricket Ahead Of India's Busy Schedule

According to a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source speaking anonymously to PTI, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are considered automatic selections for the ODI setup. They will use the upcoming three ODIs against England before the Champions Trophy as crucial practice. Their focus will then shift to Test matches, with India scheduled to play 10 Tests from September to January.

"Both are automatic choices in ODI set up and the three 50 over games against England before the Champions Trophy is good enough practice for them. For next few months, they both will prioritize Tests and India will play 10 of them between September to January," a BCCI source anonymously told PTI.

India will play two Tests against Bangladesh, followed by three against New Zealand, leading up to the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Australia.

"The Champions Trophy will happen in mid February and they don't need to go for a week-long 3 match ODIs in Sri Lanka. If they want, they are most welcome but I guess they would want rest," the PTI source added.
