Rohit Sharma was named the Player of the Match as India defeated England by a significant 100-run margin in the World Cup 2023 match held at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, October 29.

Rohit Sharma's performance was crucial to team India as he scored 87 runs off 101 balls, including 10 fours and three sixes. This was particularly crucial because the pitch in Lucknow was challenging for batting. Rohit eventually got dismissed by Adil Rashid while attempting a lofted shot on the leg side.

Thanks to Rohit's contribution, India posted a total of 229 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Subsequently, the Indian bowlers managed to dismiss the England team for just 129 runs in 34.5 overs, maintaining their undefeated streak in the tournament.

Rohit Sharma secured his seventh Player of the Match (POTM) award in 50-over World Cup matches, achieving this in only his 23rd match since 2015. This accolade propelled him ahead of the legendary Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath, who had won six POTM awards.

Sachin Tendulkar Has Record 9 POTM Awards

At 36 years old, Rohit Sharma now has his sights set on equalling the record held by the iconic Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar currently holds the record for the most Player of the Match awards in ODI World Cup history with a total of nine.

Rohit's chances of matching Tendulkar's record are promising, especially considering his recent achievements. He secured his first POTM award of the ongoing tournament against Afghanistan when he broke Kapil Dev's record for the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in World Cups. He continued his match-winning performances, including the one against defending champions England.

As it stands, India occupies the top spot in the points table of the tournament and is the only unbeaten team with six consecutive wins. Their next challenge is against Sri Lanka in the 33rd fixture of the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, which is scheduled for Thursday, November 3 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
