Hardik Pandya’s gutsy knock (51)  went in vain as Royal Challengers Bangalore stunned Mumbai Indians by 14 runs to win the ‘battle for survival’ at M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday.


Defending a modest 168, Royal Challengers Bangalore pacers Umesh Yadav and Tim Southee gave the hosts a flying start; Southee got rid of wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan (0) in the very first over of the innings while Umesh struck on back to back deliveries in the 4th over to send Suryakumar Yadav (9) and Rohit Sharma (0) packing.


All-rounder Kieron Pollard once again disappointed with the bat, scoring 13 off 13 deliveries before gifting his wicket to Mohammed Siraj.


Hardik Pandya and JP Duminy (23) showed some resilience for the visitors as they managed a 37-run stand for the 5th wicket. But, the South African ran himself out in a bid to reduce the mounting pressure.


Pandya later combined with his brother Krunal (23) to take the Mumbai based outfit closer to Victory. But, a brilliant bowling effort from the RCB bowlers in the death overs helped them seize victory and keep playoff hopes alive.

Mumbai Indians bowlers exploited a difficult batting track but leaked a few runs towards to end to allow Royal Challengers Bangalore post 167 for seven in an IPL match, the outcome of which will decide their survival in the League.


Captain Virat Kohli (32) and Brendon McCullum (37) added 60 quick runs in the middle overs to help the side recover from a slow start but Hardik Pandya (3/28) scalped three batsmen and effected a run out to stop the hosts from running away with a big total.


Colin de Grandhomme (23 from 10) hit three sixes in the last over, bowled by fellow New Zealander Mitchell McClenaghan to provide a flourishing finish to the innings. 


Opener Manan Vohra (45) played a useful knock at the top before being trapped by Mayank Markande.


As the wicket offered turned and pacers too generated pace, Mumbai Indians succeeded in straight-jacketing the RCB batsmen. Since it had rained, there was dampness in the wicket, causing the ball to come a slow on the bat.


Vohra broke the shackles by creaming off 22 runs from South African all-rounder JP Duminy's second over.


McClenaghan, though, kept troubling Quinton de Kock (7) , who struggled badly to connect the bat with the ball and was eventually caught brilliantly by Rohit Sharma at short mid-wicket off the Kiwi paceman.


Considering the conditions, expectedly, all three spinners were employed by captain Rohit Sharma. Krunal Pandya turned the ball away from McCullum while impressive Markande yet again kept the batsmen in a tight leash.

Toss


Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru.


It will be a do-or-die encounter for both the side. With only two wins from past seven games, both will need to win 6 games out of remaining seven to keep their hopes of making it to playoffs alive.


Royal Challengers Bangalore have made one change to their playing with Washington Sundar coming back for Murali Ashwin. Ab de Villiers, on the other hand, misses out again due to fever.


Mumbai Indians have one change as well with Kieron Pollard replacing Evin Lewis.

Struggling sides Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore will have a fight for survival when they lock horns in an Indian Premier League here on Tuesday.


Having beaten Chennai Super Kings in their adopted home ground in Pune, MI will go out with their tails up with confidence to take on a strong batting line-up of RCB, which has the likes of Virat Kohli and Brendon McCllum.


On the other hand, the heartbreaking back-to-back defeats at the hands of CSK and Kolkata Knight Riders in their backyard would have devastated the team's confidence, but RCB will have to play out of their skins to stay in the competition.


It has been an almost identical journey for both teams so far. Mumbai and Dinesh Karthik-led KKR have managed just two wins in seven matches each, but the visitors are ahead at sixth place due to better net run rate.


Whichever team that loses tomorrow will find it more difficult to get a shot at a play-offs berth.  


Mumbai would like to take a cue from their last encounter against RCB, which they had won by 46 runs at the Wankhede Stadium with Rohit Sharma and Evin Lewis hitting 94 and 65 respectively.


Barring Suryakumar Yadav, who has 274 runs under his belt in seven matches as an opener, most of the Mumbai batsmen have been inconsistent. Captain Rohit, who has failed to get past 20 runs in five games, will try to play yet another impactful innings tomorrow.


The team would like Rohit, who has scored 196 runs in seven matches, to bat either one-down as he did in the last game or open the innings to give the much needed time for him to settle down at the crease.


Pandya brothers -- Hardik and Krunal -- who have been good in their bowling would like to get a big knocks with the bat as they have managed to score just 61 and 113 runs in seven-odd matches they have played.


JP Dumminy, who came in for Kieron Pollard in the last game, would be itching to be in the thick of things. The South African did not bat in the last match as Mumbai crossed the winning mark without his services.


Mumbai also have been struggling with the ball as they have failed to prosper as a unit. Young Mayank Markande has been a revelation for them and has bagged 10 wickets from seven games with his leg-spin.


Death-over specialist Jasprit Bumrah and Mustafizur Rahman have bagged seven and six wickets respectively so far, and if Mumbai want to restrict the likes of Kohli and McCullum, they will have to play their role to perfection.


On the other hand, RCB are struggling at seventh position after two wins and five defeats.


RCB would be praying for the return of AB de Villiers, who did not play the last game due to fever. The South African star has been in prime form this season, smashing 68 off 30 balls against CSK and singlehandedly defeating Delhi Daredevils with his unbeaten 39-ball 90.


Kohli would be keen to produce another special knock in this crunch situation, especially after getting two unbeaten knocks of 92 and 68 against Mumbai and KKR, respectively.


Opener Quinton De Kock, who has scored 194 runs so far, would like to carry on with his good performance.
