Even though there are a lot of eyeballs on what the Indian team management does with out-of-opener KL Rahul especially after he was stripped of vice-captaincy in the last two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, captain Rohit Sharma has said that it doesn't mean anything big.
Speaking at a press conference on the eve of the third Test match at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, Rohit said that all the 17 players named in the squad would have a chance to get featured in the Playing 11. He said that Rahul was made the vice-captain only because the team did not have senior players at that time.
"All 17 players in the team has a chance. The team will back those who are talented. Stripping vice-captaincy doesn't mean anything big. He was made the vice captain because maybe there was not many experienced players at that time. It is not a big thing," the Indian opener told the media.
It is pertinent to note that Rahul has only managed to score 38 runs in the 3 innings so far and despite the team management's faith in him, it would getting difficult for them to continue to give him chances especially with someone like a Shubman Gill waiting for his chance.
With Rahul removal as the vice-captain, it was hinted that he could be rested but now the captain has said that it doesn't mean anything big. Does that suggest that Rohit will continue to open the innings with Rahul? We shall wait and see with the first ball of the Test match set to be bowled at 09:30 am (IST).
