Renowned Indian journalist and Editor-in-Chief of news channel, India TV has been elected as the president of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA).
The DDCA elections took place from June 27-30 while the results were declared on Monday. Sharma has successfully defeated the candidates like former cricketer Madan Lal and Supreme Court advocate Vikas Singh. He is all set to serve a 3-year presidential term.
According to the reports, Sharma thanked all the members of the association for electing him for the supreme post. He said, “I thank all members of DDCA who voted in the elections and trusted us. I shall invite every member to join hands and bring transparency in DDCA’s functioning.
The last polling day witnessed the heaviest voter turnout as approximately, 2,800 votes of the 3,800 valid votes were polled. Many big names from cricket and political fraternity arrived to cast their votes on June 30.
Former Delhi and international cricketers like Bishan Singh Bedi, Kirti Azad, Manoj Prabhakar, Virender Sehwag, Yashpal Sharma, Bantoo Singh, Robin Singh Junior, Vivek Razdan, Sanjeev Sharma, Nikhil Chopra, Raj Kumar Sharma, Gursharan Singh, Jaya Sharma came to cast their vote, as did current Delhi Ranji skipper and India pace bowler Ishant Sharma. Other former cricketers—Aakash Chopra, Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Sanghvi—had cast their vote a day earlier.
BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry and chairman of IPL governing council Rajeev Shukla, came to cast their votes as well.
Former Indian hockey captain Ajit Pal Singh, too, turned up to cast his vote as did local officials from the IOA.
The DDCA is the first state cricket association to conduct polls following the Justice R.M. Lodha reforms. The elections were held under the watch of Delhi High Court appointed and former Supreme Court judge Vikramjit Sen.
