The recent update from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) indicates that star bowler Mohammad Shami has been ruled out of the Test series for the South Africa tour due to fitness concerns. The BCCI Medical Team hasn't cleared Shami, who topped the wicket-taking list in the ODI World Cup with 24 wickets but is currently recovering from an ankle injury. He's expected to regain fitness for India's upcoming five-test series against England starting on January 25.

In another development, fast bowler Deepak Chahar won't be participating in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa due to a family medical emergency. Akash Deep has been named as his replacement in the ODI squad by the Men’s Selection Committee. Shreyas Iyer will join the Test squad after the first ODI on December 17 but won't be available for the last two ODIs in the South Africa tour. The replacement for Shami in the Test series is yet to be announced by the BCCI.

Additionally, Rahul Dravid and the coaching staff will concentrate on preparing the Test squad, including organising an inter-squad game. The India A’s Coaching Staff, comprising Sitanshu Kotak, Rajib Datta, and Ajay Ratra, will support the ODI team during this period.

India’s updated ODI squad includes Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Tilak Varma, Rajat Patidar, Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (C)(wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, and Akash Deep.

India's Test squad for South Africa comprises Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (wk), KL Rahul (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Mohammad Shami*, Jasprit Bumrah (vice-capt), and Prasidh Krishna.
