New Delhi: The 5th India vs England Test match which was cancelled in September 2021 has been rescheduled to July 2022. The fifth Test between England and India was called due to the Indian team not being able to field a team due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Indian contingent.

The 5th Test will now be played on 1 July 2022 at Edgbaston in England.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement that following an agreement between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), 'the cancelled match that was supposed to be played at Old Trafford will now be played at now at Edgbaston, starting July 1, 2022'.

Following the Test match at Edgbaston, India will also play three T20Is and three ODIs against England, with the tour concluding on 17 July.

It has become crucial in the post-WTC era to finish the full series. The series result would not have been of great significance in the pre-World Test Championship era but since the WTC cycle has begun, each Test win has its impact on the final points table of WTC.

“We are very pleased that we have reached an agreement with BCCI to creating a fitting end to what has been a brilliant series so far," said Tom Harrison, ECB Chief Executive Officer.

“We would like to apologise again to fans for the disruption and disappointment of September events. We know it was a day that so many had planned long in advance," he added.

“I am delighted that the England-India Test series will now have its rightful conclusion. The four Test matches were riveting, and we needed a fitting finale," said Jay Shah, the Secretary of BCCI.
