IND vs ENG Day 1 Highlights: India made a commanding start to the five-match Test series against England, finishing Day 1 of the first Test at Headingley on 359/3, thanks to brilliant centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and Shubman Gill (127*). At Stumps, Gill and Pant (65) returned unbeaten.

The young duo stitched together a solid partnership, frustrating the English bowlers with their disciplined and fluent strokeplay.

Jaiswal brought up his second overseas Test hundred with a blend of aggression and composure, while Gill silenced his critics with a well-constructed century of his own. Their efforts put India firmly in control after being put in to bat first, setting the tone for what promises to be a thrilling contest.

Strong start for India

Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul gave the team a strong start with a 91-run partnership, with Rahul contributing a composed 42.

Although debutant Sai Sudarshan was dismissed for a duck, Jaiswal carried on confidently, forging a century stand with captain Shubman Gill and bringing up a brilliant 101 before being dismissed.

Gill, leading the team for the first time in Tests, continued the charge alongside Rishabh Pant. The duo stitched another century partnership for the fourth wicket. At stumps, Gill was unbeaten on 127 off 175 balls, while Pant stood firm at 65* off 102, taking India to a formidable 359/3.

England asks India to bat first

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first in the opening Test.

While England is fielding a strong unit under Stokes’ leadership, India is being led by Shubman Gill and features a young and relatively inexperienced squad. Notably, this is the first time in many years that India is playing a Test series without stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
