Ashwin reached his century in just 108 balls, coming in when India were struggling at 144 for 6. His individual innings and a record 195 runs partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (86*) on day 1 has put India in a position to eye a total of at least 350.
India bounced back impressively from 144/6 to 339/6 at stumps on Day 1, thanks to an unbeaten 195-run partnership between Ashwin and Jadeja. Their partnership shifted the momentum, putting India in a commanding position.
Ashwin-Jadeja shatters 24-year-old record
After Bangladesh had India struggling at 144/6, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja turned the game around with a counter-attacking partnership. Adopting an aggressive approach, the pair took on the Bangladeshi bowlers.
Their 100-run stand for the 7th wicket shattered a 24-year-old record for the highest 7th-wicket partnership against Bangladesh.
The previous record for India's highest 7th-wicket partnership against Bangladesh was held by Sourav Ganguly and Sunil Joshi, who put together a 121-run stand in the Dhaka Test of 2000. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have now set a new milestone for India.
Ashwin and Jadeja seem well-set to extend the lead further. If the duo continue their batting form on Day 2 as they did today, reaching a total of 400 or more looks highly achievable.
