Australia claimed a thumping 10-wicket win on Day 3 of the second Test between India and Australia in Adelaide, levelling the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1-1. After dismissing India for 175 in their second innings, Australia needed just 19 runs to win the Pink-ball Test.
India, resuming their innings at 128/5, lost their final five wickets for just 47 runs in 12.5 overs. Nitish Kumar Reddy was the top scorer for India on Day 3, contributing 42 runs off 47 balls.
How India can qualify for World Test Championship Final
The top two teams in WTC Points table at the end of current cycle will qualify for WTC Final in London next year. Australia's dominant 10-wicket win in the second Test in Adelaide has improved their chances of reaching the final. Meanwhile, India faces a tough challenge after their heavy defeat, which has put their qualification hopes in jeopardy.
If IND vs AUS BGT ends in a 2-2 draw
For India to have a chance at qualifying for WTC Final if India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy ends in a 2-2 draw, India would require South Africa (currently leading SA vs SL Test series 1-0) to win their series 2-0 against Sri Lanka, along with Sri Lanka defeating Australia by at least a 1-0 margin in their two-Test series.
If India loses Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-3 to Australia, their chances of reaching WTC Final would depend on the following conditions:
New Zealand must draw 1-1 with England.
South Africa must draw 1-1 with both Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
The Sri Lanka vs Australia series must end in a 0-0 draw.
If India wins BGT 3-2
Even with a 3-2 win over Australia in Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India would still rely on Sri Lanka to draw at least one of their two upcoming Tests against Australia, scheduled for January-February next year.
If India wins BGT 3-1
If India wins Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1, their qualification for WTC Final would also depend on South Africa's performance. A win by the Proteas in their second Test against Sri Lanka (after their 233-run win in the first) could help improve India's chances.
