India succumbed to a 146-run defeat in the second Test against Australia in Perth on Tuesday. While chasing a competitive target of 287 runs, the hosts were bowled out for 146 on the final day, handing over a chance to the hosts to level the series. After a humiliating defeat, skipper Virat Kohli admitted that they misread the green top at the Optus Stadium and should have fielded Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI.
During the post-match presentation, Kohli admired the way Nathan Lyon excelled on the track which made the visitors think that ‘4 quicks would be enough’.
“When we looked at the pitch, we didn't think about that [Jadeja] option. We thought four quicks would be enough,” said the Indian skipper.
“Nathan Lyon bowled really well on this wicket. With the skill levels and consistency that he has to get something out of this wicket was really good. We never thought about the spin option, to be honest,” he added.
Speaking about his controversial dismissal in the first innings, he said, “When you don't win, you don't rank your performance. We didn't get the result we wanted. It was a decision made on the field (about his first innings dismissal), it stays there. There is nothing more to it.”
India would be looking to get over the defeat and find ways of getting back and leading the series in Melbourne. Kohli stated that he is focusing on the next game as it’s going to be a memorable game.
“I am focused on the next Test at the MCG and I hope I can contribute on a winning note. It's always going to be a special occasion. Boxing Day is going to be a full house, it's a memorable Test for all of us and we as a team are also excited and looking forward to that Test match,” said Kohli.
Australia levelled the series 1-1 in Perth and now both the sides will be having an 8-day gap before they lock horns in the 3rd Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on the Boxing Day, i.e., December 26.
