Shikhar Dhawan narrowly missed out on registering a hat-trick of half-centuries against New Zealand but he did complete a hat-trick in another form. The Indian opener hit Doug Bracewell for three consecutive fours in the third ODI at Mount Maunganui on Monday.

Dhawan gave a blazing start to India after they bowled out New Zealand for 243. In the second over of India’s chase, Dhawan smashed Bracewell for three fours. The first two boundaries came through the covers and when Bracewell tried to adjust his line, he overcompensated and was flicked through the mid-wicket region for the third boundary of the over.

Dhawan was looking all set to bring up yet another half-century when Trent Boult found the outside edge of his bat. Dhawan was out for 28 off 27 balls after putting up a 39-run opening stand with Rohit Sharma.

Dhawan had scored 66 and 75* in the first two matches of the series.
