The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering launching a new cricket league for retired cricketers, tentatively named the 'Legends Premier League.'

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, some former Indian cricketers have discussed this idea with BCCI Secretary Jay Shah and the board is contemplating starting the league by next year.

"We have received a proposal from former cricketers in this regard, which is being considered. However, it is still at the proposal stage," a BCCI official told Dainik Jagran.

Currently, BCCI organizes two leagues: the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Women's Premier League (WPL).

There are already several Legends leagues around the world, including Global Legends League, Legends League Cricket, Road Safety World Series and World Championship of Legends. These leagues are primarily for retired cricketers.

If BCCI launches its own Legends league, it will be the first such tournament organized by a national cricket board, as current leagues are privately run. The new league could feature players like Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, and AB de Villiers.

Sachin Tendulkar led India Legends to victory in the first two editions of Road Safety World Series. Recently, under Yuvraj Singh's captaincy, the Indian team won the World Championship of Legends held in England.

Yuvraj's team included several members from the 2007 and 2011 T20 World Cup-winning squads, such as Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, and Robin Uthappa. India defeated Pakistan in the final to claim the trophy.

No Legends League this year

Even if BCCI secures all necessary approvals and makes the preparations for an inaugural Legends League, it will not take place this year. With the IPL 2025 mega auction scheduled, the Legends League would likely become a reality only next year.
