Australian Open 2024: 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic will not be able to add another one of those titles at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne this year. The Serbian tennis star's run came to an end in the semifinal where his Italian opponent Jannik Sinner got the better of him 6-1, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3 in a match that lasted over 3 hours and 20 minutes. With this Sinner became the first finalist of the season's opening grand slam and the first Italian to do so. He will meet the winner of the other semifinal between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.
This is a remarkable achievement for Sinner who makes it to his first-ever grand slam final. The 22-year-old managed to achieve it against Djokovic who lost his first match in Melbourne in six years. This also happens to be the first time that Djokovic has faltered at the semifinal stage of the Australian open with a perfect 100 per cent record in the previous 10 semifinals. While he saved a match point in the tie-breaker of the third set, bringing all his experience into play but eventually he lost to Sinner who was clearly the better player on the court on Friday (January 26).
New Champion Set To Be Crowned At Australian Open 2024
The result now means that Australian Open 2024 will witness the crowning of a new champion. Both Medvedev and Zverev have never won the Australian Open before. While the Russian at least has a Grand Slam title to his credit, winning the US Open in 2021. His German opponent in the second semifinal has not won a Grand Slam to date. Sinner, too, is yet to open the account as far as Grand Slam titles are concerned, with this titular contest, in fact, being his first-ever final at a Grand Slam event. E
