In a major breakthrough in the case involving a gruesome attack on team India's former cricketer Suresh Raina's family, Punjab Police on Sunday arrested Chhajju alia Chhaimar of Baheri, in connection with attack on Raina's relatives in which his uncle and a cousin were killed.
Punjab Police, in a joint operation with Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), arrested Chhajju from Pachpedha village that falls under Baheri police station.
The accussed has confessed to committing robbery and murder. On the night of August 19 2020, a gang had robbed the house of Ashok Kumar, uncle of cricketer Suresh Raina, resident of Madhopur Thariyal police station Shahpur Kandi in Pathankot.
Last year, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had announced that three members of an inter-state gang of robber-criminals had been arrested, over two weeks after Raina took to Twitter to confirm that his relatives in Punjab were attacked and his uncle was slaughtered to death.
"What happened to my family is Punjab was beyond horrible. My uncle was slaughtered to death, my bua & both my cousins had sever injuries. Unfortunately my cousin also passed away last night after battling for life for days. My bua is still very very critical & is on life support," Raina had written.
"Till date we don’t know what exactly had happened that night & who did this. I request @PunjabPoliceInd to look into this matter. We at least deserve to know who did this heinous act to them. Those criminals should not be spared to commit more crimes. @capt_amarinder @CMOPb"
Suresh Raina's uncle Ashok Kumar, a contractor, had died on the spot, while Kumar's son, Kaushal, succumbed to injuries on August 31. Chhajju told police he fled to Hyderabad after the incident, stayed there for some time, and then returned to his village in Bareilly.
