New Delhi: Tiger, the apex predator, never ceases an opportunity to hunt down its prey. The size and ferocity of the other animal hardly matters when the tiger hunts for food. But there are some animals like a bison or a wildebeest which forces the tiger to think twice; past experience, wounds strike fear in its mind. But that doesn’t stop the tiger from going after them. England is just like that bison for Indian test captain Virat Kohli. All the previous encounters have left the run machine badly bruised. However, hopes will again rest on Virat when India take on England in a five match Test series starting from November 9 at Rajkot.  Here are five reasons why this England series will be toughest of his career. Worst record against England  Amongst all the test playing nations Virat’s record is the worst against Alastair Cook’s men.  In his 9 encounters with England, Virat averages a mere 20.12, with just one hundred, while his career average is a healthy 45.56. That average comes down to 13.40 when we take the last 5 matches against England into consideration. The otherwise run machine struggled to put bat to ball when India toured England in 2014 and whenever he did more often than  not it was an outside edge to slips. Stuart Board and company would again like to exploit Virat’s tendency to poke outside off stump. A lethal combination of pace and spin Virat’s latest assignments against West Indies and New Zealand turned out to be successful. He became the first Indian captain to score two double hundreds in one calendar year. But those two bowling attacks didn’t possess as much threat as England will. Leader of the pack Stuart Broad has a formidable record against India, with 46 wickets in 12 outings. His new ball partner in the first test in absence of James Anderson, Chris Woakes, has had a great start to his international career. The likes of Ben Stokes who grabbed 11 wickets by consistent reverse swing in Bangladesh will cause a lot of problems to the Indian captain. Nobody can forget what Moeen Ali did to India in 2014, picking 19 wickets in 5 matches and effecting serious damage to India’s hopes. Moeen has come a long way since then and now is the leading spinner of England. He will have leg spinner Adil Rashid by his side this time. England’s all time highest wicket taker James Anderson will also the squad and will take part in the second test. With variety and experience this bowling can cause a lot of problems not only to Kohli but the entire Indian batting line up. Absence of key players Like always, the onus will be on Virat Kohli to score big against England. But this time he will not have the services of the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and in-form Kl Rahul. More reasons why there will added pressure on the Indian captain. Veteran opener Gautam Gmabhir will open the batting with Murali Vijay. The alarming fact is that Gambhir also had a torrid time in England last time when the southpaw played against them. With a relatively new middle order, England’s main target will be India’s No. 4. 0-4, 1-2, 1-3 defeats The last team that defeated India in their own backyard was England, back in 2012. A year earlier they had inflicted a whitewash. If these were not enough, the touring Indian side suffered a 1-3 defeat in 2014. England has always been a thorn in the flesh for India. Amongst the 55 matches played in India between these two teams, England have won 13 matches and India have got the better of them in 15 occasions. The statistics show England is a pretty good touring side. Virat Kolhi will have to play out of his skin to turn tables against this English side. Toughest assignment as captain With back to back series victories against South Africa, West Indies and New Zealand, Virat’s record as a captain has been nothing short of phenomenal. This time around, he will up against a side consisting of Joe Root, Alastair Cook, Ben Stokes, James Anderson and Stuart Broad; names good enough to strike a fear in any opposing captain. This will be his toughest assignment after taking over from Dhoni and he will have his work cut out to do something which his predecessor could not achieve in his last three attempts; a series victory against England.
