A man in Pennsylvania in the United States has broken the Guinness World Records (GWR) for the most movies watched in the cinema within a single year. According to the records keeping company, 32-year-old Zach Swope watched 777 movies in between July 2022 and July 2023 in an attempt to raise awareness for autism and suicide prevention. The previous record was 715, held by Vincent Krohn of France in 2018.

Swope, who is a "huge lover of film" and watches an average of 100-150 movies at the cinema each year, viewed a diverse selection of films, commencing with "Minions: Rise of Gru" and concluding with "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny."

To set this record, one has to watch all films in their entirety and each one must be watched independently of any other activity. Taking a nap or even using a phone in between the movies would disqualify the person, said the records keeping company GWR.

Swope was monitored by cinema employees during each screening to ensure he didn’t break these rules. Most of the films he watched was at the Regal Cinemas, using his Regal Unlimited Membership, which allows him to watch an unlimited number of films for $22 every month.

While creating this record, Swope continued with his job that was for 5 days a week from 6:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. After finishing office, he would visit the cinema to watch up to three films, and on weekends he would watch more, reported GWR.

Though, no daily target was set by Swope, he aimed to see 16-17 films per week in order to achieve this record.

Swope's favourite film was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was his 716th film of the year – the one that would take him past the previous record.
