Tripura Sends Special Team To Violence-Hit Manipur To Bring Back Its Students

Life returned to a wary normalcy in Imphal Valley on Saturday as shops and markets reopened and cars started plying on the roads amid tight security presence.

In view of the ongoing violence in Manipur, the Tripura government has sent a special team to the state for coordinating and bringing back its students by flight at the earliest. A press release by the chief minister's office (CMO) read, " In continuation of the sincere efforts to help the students of Tripura studying in Manipur, a special team has been sent by the Govt of Tripura to Manipur for coordinating & bringing back Tripura's students. Necessary arrangements have been made to bring them back by flight at the earliest."

Earlier in the day, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the Centre is taking all necessary measures to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur. While speaking to reporters, he said the Union Home Minister Amit Shah himself is monitoring the situation and taking all possible steps to contain the violence in the state where the death toll has increased to 54.

"Peace is required to take forward the development of the beautiful northeast as a society can progress only when there is peace," said Rijiju, according to PTI.

"Communal violence between two communities is a very unfortunate incident. Many lives have been lost and there is damage to property," he further said.

Large number of people including students were also seen assembled at Imphal airport to try get a flight out of the troubled state, according to PTI.

Rioting broke out in the state after demonstrations were organised by tribals –including Kukis and Nagas - on Wednesday against a move to give the majority Meitei community, scheduled tribe status.
