Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on a two-day visit during which he is set to meet the BJP's state core committee and launch development projects valued at nearly Rs 11,600 crore, reported PTI. According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, thousands assembled in Khanapara to illuminate 1,00,000 diyas, welcoming and celebrating the Prime Minister's arrival.
The PM arrived at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport around 6:30 p.m. and made his way to the Koinadhora State Guest House. He was received by Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State Ministers, and senior civil and police officers.
Assam CM Sarma also informed on X, "Thousands assemble in Khanapara to illuminate 1,00,000 diyas, welcoming and celebrating the arrival of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri narendramodi ji in Assam."
Sarma had stated on Friday that the PM will meet at night to address party matters with the BJP's state core committee.
Modi is scheduled to address a public meeting on Sunday at 11:30 am at the Veterinary College Playground in Khanapara, where several state and central projects will be unveiled. Key projects include the Kamakhya temple corridor (Rs 498 crore), a six-lane road from the new airport terminal in Guwahati (Rs 358 crore), the upgradation of Nehru Stadium to FIFA standards (Rs 831 crore), and a new sports complex in Chandrapur (Rs 300 crore).
The second phase of Asom Mala roads, consisting of 43 new roads and 38 concrete bridges with a total investment of Rs 3,444 crore, will also be initiated by the PM. Additionally, Modi will lay the foundation stone for an integrated new building of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, costing Rs 3,250 crore. He will also initiate the construction of the proposed Karimganj Medical College and Hospital (Rs 578 crore) and the Unity Mall in Guwahati (Rs 297 crore).
Besides, Modi will also inaugurate the newly constructed four-lane road from Biswanath Chariali to Gohpur at a cost of Rs 1,451 crore, and another four-lane road from Dolabari to Jamuguri constructed at a cost of Rs 592 crore.
"In total, the prime minister will lay foundation stones or inaugurate projects worth Rs 11,599 crore, funded by both state government and the Centre," Sarma also said, PTI reported.
Modi is expected to return after the program on Sunday.
