The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday directed the Manipur government to step in and ensure that no further violence takes place in the violence-struck northeastern state. NHRC issued a statement late Tuesday night, in which it asked the state government to inform it about the action taken reports and rehabilitation of victims, within two weeks. The human rights panel said, "The authorities are directed to ensure that no further violence, which resulted in violation of human rights, takes place. In most of the matters relating to violation of human rights due to continued violence in the state of Manipur, the action taken reports sought by it from the state government are awaited," reported news agency PTI.
The statement continued, "Therefore, it becomes imperative to know what actions have been taken by the concerned authority in the series of incidents that kept on happening for a considerable period and the disturbances are continuing for a pretty long time."
The Commission wanted to know about the efforts made by the authorities for the betterment of the victims, prior to it arriving at any final decision. The statement detailed that the Commission would like to know about the quantum of compensation awarded as of now to the victims and the number of people and family members who have been covered under the compensation scheme, reported PTI.
The NHRC said that it has asked about the number of people rehabilitated and whether the process of compassionate employment being awarded to the next of kin of the deceased, who died in the violence, has been initiated or not. It further asked about the progress regarding the same.
The commission expects that enough steps are taken to help the communities, prevent them from any kind of violence and also to maintain peace, harmony, and unity to strengthen the bonds of people, as mentioned in Article 51-A of the Constitution of India.
