The flood situation in Assam on Wednesday worsened, affecting nearly 1.20 lakh people in 20 districts, Assam State Disaster Management Authority said in a statement. Till Tuesday, over 34,000 people were affected due to floods across nine districts.
The water levels of several rivers are flowing above the danger level mark, inundating new areas as heavy rainfall continued to lash Assam, other neighbouring states and Bhutan.
The authority said 780 villages under 45 revenue villages of Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Udalguri districts were affected by the floods.
Floods have also inundated urban areas like Bajali, Darrang, Kamrup (Metro), Kokrajhar and Nalbari districts.
The latest report said 44,707 people have been affected alone in Nalbari district followed by 26,571 people in Baksa, 25,096 people in Lakhimpur, 15,610 people in Tamulpur and 3,840 people in Barpeta district.
The district administration has set up 14 relief camps and 17 distribution centres. Over 2,000 people have taken shelter in relief camps in Baksa, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Nalbari and Tamulpur district.
Over 1.07 lakh domestic animals, poultry have also been affected in the flood-hit districts.
On Wednesday, 1280 people were evacuated from flood-hit areas by the NDRF, SDRF and fire and emergency services.
Dima Hasao and Kamrup Metropolitan have reported incidents of landslides due to heavy rainfall while several distrcits have seen damages to infrastructure.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange alert', predicting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several districts over the next few days.
"Moisture incursion is very likely to continue due to strong low-level southerly/southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India during the next two days," IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati said, PTI reported.
"Under its influence, widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall/ thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to continue over the northeast region during the next two days and likely to decrease gradually thereafter,"the IMD statement said.
