Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim on Monday with two more people losing their lives and over 65,000 people still being affected due to the deluge. A total of 316 villages across eight districts; Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Chirang, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kokrajhar, and Sonitpur are still reeling under flood waters. Both deaths due to drowning were reported from the state’s Sonitpur district, taking the total number of deaths in floods this year to 14.

The flood situation has however improved marginally in some districts as the major rivers showed a receding trend though rivers Brahmaputra, Beki, and Disang continue to flow above the danger mark at Barpeta, Sivasagar, Tezpur, and Jorhat districts.

Dhemaji continues to be the worst-affected district where 31,087 people are still suffering, followed by Sivasagar with 29,383 people still facing severe difficulties due to the floods.

The district authorities have set up 27 relief camps across the affected districts where as many as 1,329 people are being provided shelter.  nort

Relief materials are being distributed to the flood-affected people through 20 relief distribution centres.

The flood waters continue to inundate over 5,743 hectares of cropland across the affected districts.

The floods have also affected a total of 22,889 domestic animals and poultry, besides damaging hundreds of houses, roads, bridges, culverts, irrigation canals, and embankments.

Major roads have been damaged due to floods in Jorhat’s Teok, Chirang’s Bijni, and Sonitpur’s Chariduar while several embankments have been breached at Nazira in Sivasagar district.

Assam witnessed one of the worst-ever floods in 2022 as over 88 lakh population was affected and 181 people lost their lives.

Almost all of the then 35 districts, before the merger of a few districts of the state, were ravaged by the floods with people being forced to take refuge on the National Highways.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of 838 people died in the floods in the state during 2013-2022, of whom 181 died in 2021, which is the highest human death toll in floods in a year.

The flood situation in the state is unlikely to improve soon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rains in the region in the next few days.
