Yamaha India has introduced a new variant of the YZF-R15 Version 3.0 equipped with dual-channel ABS at Rs 1.39 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The ABS model commands a premium of Rs 12,000 over the one without the safety feature. The motorcycle is available in the existing Racing Blue or Thunder Grey colours as well as an all-new Darknight colour option. Priced at Rs 1.41 lakh (ex-Delhi), the new colour option is Rs 2,000 more expensive than the grey and blue colour options. Apart from a small ABS logo on the fairing, the motorcycle looks pretty much the same as the non-ABS variant.
The dual-channel ABS module has resulted in a weight gain of 3kg, and the bike now weighs 142kg (wet. At present, the R15 v3.0 is the only bike with a dual-channel ABS In the 150cc class. The powertrain and the mechanical underpinnings remain the same as before. The bike is powered by a 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology. The engine puts out 19.3PS at 10,000rpm and 15Nm at 8500rpm and is paired to a 6-speed transmission with assist and slipper clutch. Suspension bits include telescopic front forks and a rear link-type monoshock. The dual-channel ABS acts on the same 282mm front and 220mm rear disc brakes.
Currently, there are no natural rivals for the R15 v3.0 in its segment, at least in India. Even though the addition of the essential safety feature has pushed the price of the R15 to almost Rs 1.4 lakh, we believe it will still find takers as it is the only faired, liquid-cooled motorcycle in its class. Moreover, it offers a good balance of performance, technology and safety too.
