A former gynaecologist has been charged with the sexual assault of 87 women in a shocking scandal that has rocked Norway. The victims of the assault were as young as 14 years old, while the oldest was aged 67, The Sun reported. The 55-year-old doctor Arne Bye allegedly filmed these examinations over a span of 20 years. He is currently on trial facing serious allegations of sexual misconduct, which include offences against two minors.
One of the women, recalling the horror, said she thought she was going to die. Another victim, who had visited her doctor for a sore throat, described how she found herself in a vulnerable position during an invasive examination, the report added.
6,000 Hours Of Video Clips Found From Doctor's Possession
Authorities have found more than 6,000 hours of video footage in his possession, which included recordings of his gynaecological examinations. Reports show that he used various objects, described as "deodorant-like," "bottle-like," and cylindrical, on the women without any legitimate medical justification.
Norwegian broadcaster NRK said he partially admitted to the rape charges in court. It said one of the clips showed him putting up several cameras in the room before he began examining one of the women.
A woman who visited the doctor for treatment alleged that he had massaged her genitals during check-ups. Concerns were raised about him as long ago as 2006 - by another doctor in the gynaecology ward at a local hospital. A probe was launched in August 2022 after health authorities alerted them to the possible behaviour.
Bye has pleaded guilty to three cases of sexual assault that may lead him to imprisonment for up to 21 years.
