“We expect to reach a total of 10M cases within next week. This is a sober reminder that even as we continue R&D into vaccines and therapeutics, we have an urgent responsibility to do everything we can with the tools we've now to suppress transmission & save lives,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom.
The worst affected country remains the United States with a total of 2,380,490 cases. The country has so far seen 1,21,969 deaths due to Covid 19. Brazil has the second-highest number of coronavirus cases with a total of 1,188,631. According to a report by the IANS, the WHO has said that despite rising cases, the infection has yet to reach its peak in the Americas.
The report said that during a press conference in Geneva Michael Ryan, executive director of WHO Health Emergencies Program informed, "I would characterize the situation in the Americas in general, and in Central and Latin America as still evolving and not having reached its peak yet, and likely to result in a sustained number of cases and continued deaths in the coming weeks."

Ryan added that many countries experience "between 25 and 50 percent rise in cases over the last week," which means that the pandemic in many countries in the region "has not peaked" and that they are "still suffering sustained community transmission".
