One person was killed while several people were hurt, with some seriously injured, after a passenger train with at least 50 people derailed in the Netherlands, reported AFP. The train is believed to derail after hitting construction equipment on the track, said the Dutch emergency services as per a report by Reuters.

According to news agency ANP, the front carriage of the night train from Leiden city to The Hague derailed and plunged into a field after the accident.

The second carriage was on its side and a fire broke out in a rear carriage which was later put off, it added.

The earlier reports had, however, reported that the passenger train had collided with a freight train.

A notice from the emergency services stated that rescue teams were at the scene of the accident near Voorschoten, a village between Leiden and The Hague.
