New Delhi: Seven Katyusha rockets on Sunday hit the Balad airbase, which previously housed US troops, in Iraq's central province of Salahudin, wounding two Iraqi soldiers, news agency IANS quoted a provincial security source as saying.

The airbase is located some 90 km north of Baghdad. Besides the injuries, some nearby buildings were also damaged, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

On Wednesday Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched a missile attack on the US airbase of Ain al-Asad in Iraq in retaliation against the death of Major General Qasem Soleimani in an American drone attack on January 3.

"Tens of surface-to-surface missiles," were fired at the strategic airbase and the attack was also confirmed by the White House and Pentagon, reported the Tehran-based Press TV.

The Pentagon confirmed that Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles against the US military and coalition forces in Iraq.

Hours after the attack, Donald Trump had held a press conference on Wednesday evening (IST) and clarified that no Americans were harmed in last night's attack by Iranian regime. Speaking from the White House in Washington D.C, Trump said, "We suffered no casualties. All of our soldiers are safe and only minimal damage was sustained at our military bases."
