Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said that he will dissolve the National Assembly on August 9, three days before the term of the assembly is due to expire, reported Dawn. PM Shehbaz made the information public at a dinner reception hosted in honour of the ruling allies at the Prime Minister’s House, Dawn added in the report citing a source who attended the event. With this, the report said, the general elections in Pakistan will now be held within 90 days. 


According to Pakistan’s Constitution, if the assembly completes its tenure, elections are to be held in 60 days, but in case of early dissolution, this period is stretched to 90 days, the Dawn stated in its report. 


Shehbaz apprised his allies of the decision that he had held with the ruling PML-N, adding that a final round of discussions with them will take place on Friday on the caretaker set-up. Dawn mentioned that the process is likely to take at least three days. Earlier on Thursday, Foreign Minis­ter Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari held a lengthy interaction with PM Shehbaz on the matter, the source was quoted as saying by Dawn. 


The Prime Minister informed his allies about the performance of the coalition government at the dinner and claimed that they had increased revenue collection by 13 per cent in 15 months after over 1.3 million new taxpayers were included in the tax net, the Pak media reported. 


According to Dawn, the PM further claimed that the power sector recoveries remained over 90 per cent. He said that the IT sector in Pakistan witnessed significant progress during the last four months. He said that the total volume of IT expo­rts went up to $2.6 billion during the FY 2022-23, the agency mentioned. 


Foreign investment stood at $1.45 billion during the last fiscal year, the Pak PM was quoted as saying by Dawn.  


According to the news outlet, the dinner was attended by Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, Speaker of National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, PPP leaders Yousuf Raza Gilani, MQM Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, JUI-F leader Asad Mehmood, Balochistan Awami Party leaders Khalid Magsi and Senator Ahmed Khan, Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) Chairman Shahzain Bugti, Aslam Bhootani, Mohsin Dawar and others.
