A man in Nepal succumbed to his injuries after he set himself on fire in front of Nepal Federal Parliament, confirmed doctors from the hospital where he was being treated, reported news agency ANI. The 37-year-old man, identified as Prem Prasad Acharya, a businessman from Illam district, had poured diesel on himself and set himself on fire when the country’s newly elected Prime Minister Pushp Kamal Dahal’s cavalcade was coming out of the Parliament premises on Tuesday afternoon. 


“He succumbed to the burn-inflicted injuries. He had suffered 80 percent burns," Dr Kiran Nakarmi from the hospital confirmed to the news agency.


A video circulating on social media in Nepal shows bystanders trying to douse the flames after the man had set himself on fire. After the fire was put off, the man was rushed to Skin Burn Hospital in Kirtipur. 






The incident took place in the middle of the road in New Baneshwar of capital Kathmandu.


As per the ANI report, Prem Prasad Acharya had posted on his social media about his financial and mental breakdown that he had been facing for several years. The lengthy post where he had spoken about his intention to end his life has been widely shared on social media. 


The businessman stated that conditions were always unfavourable for him which prompted him to take the extreme step. He also mentioned how he had made multiple attempts previously as well but failed.

The government has not made any statement in connection with the incident. On social media, several users questioned the Prime Minister's silence on the incident that happened in front of him, the report added.
