New Delhi: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan who is scheduled to meet United States President Donald Trump next week in Washington, will be seeking the latter’s help to resolve the longstanding Kashmir issue with India, reports said.
As per a report in The Nation newspaper on Sunday, senior officials at Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry have said that the agenda was being worked out for the July 22 meeting at the White House.
This tour will be Khan's maiden visit to the US after assuming power following the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's victory in the 2018 general elections.
This would be also be the first summit-level engagement between Pakistan and the US since both leaders assumed their respective offices, an earlier statement by Pakistan’s Foreign office had said.
The newspaper quoted an official as saying “The Prime Minister will definitely take up the Kashmir issue with the US President and seek his help for the resolution of the dispute with India.”
Pakistan will also brief the US about Islamabad’s efforts for regional peace.
"The ongoing support to the US talks with the Afghan Taliban will be discussed. Pakistan is ready to go further for Afghan peace and stability," he said, adding that Islamabad had also been urging talks with New Delhi and Khan will provide details of the country's efforts so far to President Trump.
The Foreign Office had told earlier, “During his various engagements in Washington, Khan will outline his vision of 'Naya Pakistan' and underscore the importance Pakistan attaches to a broader and multi-faceted relationship with the US.”
In the regional context, Khan will underscore Pakistan's commitment to peace and stability and the importance of constructive engagement to promote a political solution in Afghanistan, the Foreign Office said.
"He will also highlight Pakistan's policy of 'peaceful neighbourhood' aimed at resolving disputes through dialogue and promoting the vision of peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia and beyond," it said.
