New Delhi: The coronavirus continues to have a firm grasp on the world as globally the number of cases increases. According to the latest data from the Centre for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE), John Hopkins University over 180 nations and regions reported a total of 1,309,439 cases with 72,638 deaths.

In the United States which has quickly become a coronavirus hotspot the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 has topped 10,000. The state of New York suffered the most deaths in the country, now standing at 4,758. Among other hard-hit states, New Jersey reported 917 fatalities, Michigan recorded 617 deaths, and California reported 350 deaths. Over 18,000 patients have recovered, according to the CSSE data.

At a Sunday briefing in the White House, US President Donald Trump said that Americans are bracing for probably the toughest week during which a lot of deaths will occur due to COVID-19.

"The US will reach a horrific point in terms of death," Trump said while voicing his optimism that "it will be a point where things will start changing for the better

France has reported 98,010 total confirmed and "confirmed or possible" cases from nursing homes. The country also had 833 more coronavirus deaths, bringing the total to 8,911. The French have been under a lockdown imposed on March 17, people have been forced to stay at home, except for trips for purposes of work, health needs or shopping of necessities. The Health Minister also announced a vast screening operation targeting elderly people in medico-social establishments in order to curb the number of deaths among the most vulnerable.

In the UK coronavirus-positive UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was admitted to a hospital here after his symptoms became "persistent", was has been shifted to the intensive care unit on Monday after his condition "worsened". According to the data the total number of confirmed cases in the country 52,279. Italy has also seen a resurgence in the death toll with 636 new deaths after two weeks of low numbers.

China has reported over 951 more new cases and a surge in asymptomatic cases. The country says that these are imported cases by Chinese returning home from abroad. But the increases in the numbers have raised fear of a second wave of infection.

In India, the latest figures from the health ministry have reported 3981 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country.
