The California State Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising November 8, 2026, as Diwali Day and encouraging people across the state to join the celebrations. The measure also conveys respect for Indian Americans and the wider Indian diaspora in California and around the world.

California Assembly Backs Diwali Day Resolution
The resolution was introduced by Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra and was adopted by the state Assembly on Thursday.
“...the Assembly recognizes this year’s Diwali festival on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and encourages Californians to take part in this joyous day of celebration,” said the resolution, adopted by the assembly on Thursday.
The resolution highlighted Diwali's significance for Indian American and South Asian American communities, noting that the festival is observed every year by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains across the United States and worldwide.
Diwali Celebrates Light, Unity And Togetherness
Describing the festival’s broader cultural importance, the resolution said Diwali, also known as Deepavali and meaning “a row of lamps,” is among the world’s oldest holidays. It brings together families, friends and communities through themes of generosity, unity, joy, appreciation and reflection.
“Diwali, commonly referred to as the Festival of Lights, is a time when homes are brightened with candles, oil lanterns, and clay lamps and the skies are filled with firecrackers to show respect for good health, wealth, knowledge, peace, and prosperity,” it said.
The resolution also pointed to the many ways Diwali is observed, saying the celebrations reflect the victory of good over evil. It linked the festival to overcoming negativity and struggles while embracing positivity, humility and kindness.

Resolution Highlights Diwali’s Message Of Positivity
For those who observe the festival, the resolution described Diwali as a period for personal reflection, learning and renewal.
“For those who celebrate, Diwali is a time to commit to knowledge, growth, and happiness; it is a time to reflect, signifying the importance of wisdom, kindness, and transformation,” the resolution read.
