Interim Deputy Police Chief Chris Rozman told media that some of the victims had 'life-threatening injuries'.

Initially, the police received information of a shooting at Berkey Hall on campus and then received reports of another shooting at a nearby building, he said. The police responded swiftly and reached the spots.

Rozman said investigators had no information about the motive of the suspect, adding that the university was not aware of any threats made to the campus before the shooting.

The shooting began shortly after 8 PM (0100 GMT). Responding to the shooting, Police found victims at both locations, Rozman told reporters at a televised briefing about three hours later, as reported by the news agency Reuters.

He said the gunman was confirmed dead, from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot roughly four hours after the violence began.

"There is no longer a threat to campus. We believe there to be only one suspect in this incident," he said, as quoted by Reuters.

Students, faculty and residents in surrounding off-campus neighborhoods of East Lansing, were asked by authorities to take shelter while the manhunt to grab the suspect was on.
