Scooters are ideal to zip around effortlessly in the city, and TVS has made a name for itself in the scooter industry with many popular products. Let’s see which one is ideal for you
It all started with the TVS Scooty, back in the 1990’s, when the Indian market was dominated by Chetaks and Kinetic Hondas. With a compact design and sprightly dynamics, the Scooty instantly became a hit among the riders, so much so that the name actually became a common noun in the country. Over the years, the Hosur-based brand not only improved the Scooty Pep with new updates, but also introduced newer models like the Jupiter and Wego to battle the fiercely growing competition, primarily the Honda Activa. This year, the auto major entered the 125cc segment too, with the tech-laden NTorq. Let’s see which scooter is apt for your needs:
TVS Scooty Pep+: Rs 40,450
The TVS Scooty Pep+ is the most affordable scooter from the Hosur-based manufacturer. Despite being an entry-level scooter, it is packed with features like mobile phone charging socket on the apron, open glove box mounted on the apron, hooks and a side stand alarm.
Its light kerb weight of just 95kg kerb makes it one of the easiest handling scooters in the segment. Consequently, it will be ideal for those who are looking for an easily maneuverable scooter for their city runabouts. However, its design is bound to appeal more to women than men. It employs an 87.8cc single-cylinder Advanced Ecothrust Engine that’s good for 5PS of power at 6500rpm and 5.8Nm of torque at 4000rpm. Price of the scooter starts from Rs 40,450, ex-showroom, Delhi for the Refresh Series.
TVS Scooty Zest 110: Rs 48,394
While the Scooty Pep+ is agile, it runs short on power, and that’s where the TVS Scooty Zest 110 comes to play. With a bigger 109.7cc single cylinder CVTi engine, the Zest packs additional grunt over the Pep+, at 7.9PS and 8.4Nm arriving at 7500rpm and 5500rpm respectively. TVS also claims a fastest pickup in its segment, with 0-60kmph sprint taking 11.1 seconds.
Moreover, it is also quite practical, thanks to the large 19-litre underseat storage with USB smartphone charger. The Matte series features an LED light for the underseat as well. The Scooty Zest 110 is perfect for those who want the dynamics of a Scooty and the power of a 110cc scooter. Its price starts from Rs 48,394 (ex-showroom Delhi) for the Himalayan Highs Series.
TVS Wego: Rs 50,515
The TVS Wego comes with a more modern design and a full metal body. Additionally, the scooter also features a digital instrument cluster with service reminder, low fuel indicator, low battery indicator and trip meter. For optimum ride quality, TVS has equipped the Wego with telescopic front forks and a rear gas-charged monoshock. Considering its design and features, the scooter will be ideal for the young hearted, who want a subtle, practical but elegant-looking 110cc scooter.
TVS Jupiter: Rs 50,566
The TVS Jupiter takes the fight to the country’s best-selling scooter, the Honda Activa. Armed with practical features like Dura Cool seat (ZX variant), sheet metal body, pass-by switch, external fuel filler, Econometer with Eco and Power indicators, this scooter is a well-loaded alternative to Honda’s cash cow. The Jupiter has the same powertrain and mechanical underpinnings as the Wego.
The ZX variant comes with more premium looking beige plastics. In a bid to woo classic scooter enthusiasts, TVS also launched the Jupiter Classic Edition in August last year. It features a windscreen, chromed rear view mirrors, premium set with cushioned backrest.
TVS NTorq: Rs 59,650
With the NTorq, TVS squarely aims at the millenials who love the seamless integration of technology with a two-wheeler. In a first for any scooter in its segment, the NTorq features a gaming console-inspired full digital display with TVS SmartXonnect technology. Pairing with the TVS NTorq smartphone app via bluetooth, you can enjoy navigation assist, view caller ID, last parked location and ride stats. The design of the scooter is also sleek and angular - something the younger audience will appreciate. The T-shaped LED light at the rear is flanked by beautifully-designed fighter aircraft-like faux vents.
The scooter draws power from a new 124.79cc OHV 3-valve engine. It generates 9.4PS at 7500rpm and 10.5Nm at 5500rpm. A 220mm front petal disc and a 130mm rear drum are standard for optimum braking. Unfortunately, TVS does not offer sync brake system on this model. The NTorq will set you back by Rs 59,650, ex-showroom, Delhi.
