Sambhal (Uttar Pradesh): In a shocking incident in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, a Samajwadi leader Chhotelal Diwakar and his son, Sunil Diwakar, were shot dead in broad daylight on Tuesday. The murder is alleged to have taken place because of the dispute which arose regarding the construction of a road under MGNREGA.

The double murder took place in the jurisdiction of Bahjoi police station.

The leader had contested the 2017 assembly elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket. It is alleged that Diwakar was in the field with his son when the killers drove on a motorbike had a brief argument after which both were shot dead.



The killers ran away leaving their motorbike behind. A large number of SP workers gathered in the village as the news of double murder spread.

SP Yamuna Prasad who reached the spot that falls under Behjoi police station, soon after the murders, said that a manhunt has been launched for the assailants. He added that investigations are ordered and the bodies have been sent for post mortem.

According to SP's district president, Firoz Khan, Chote Lal Diwakar, had been the party's candidate for the elections in 2017, however, he did not fight the elections as the seat went to the coalition party, according to news agency ANI report.  The district president of  SP blamed local goons of the area for the murder.

"Chhote Lal Diwakar (SP leader), pradhan of Sansoi village had some tussle with former pradhan over MGNREGA road work. Father&son died at spot in bullet firing. Body sent for post mortem, FIR being registered, 3 teams formed, some people detained&probe on," said Superintendent of Police, (SP), Sambhal, Yamuna Prasad to news agency ANI.

The dual murder raises a question about the law and order situation in the state.
