New Delhi: Even as the nationwide lockdown has been extended till May 17, there is some relief for women with Jan Dhan account as the banks will start transferring the second instalment of Rs 500 to bank account holders from Monday.

As per the staggered withdrawal plan for May, customers with an account number ending with 0 and 1 can withdraw the amount on Monday. Accordingly, those with account numbers ending with 2 and 3 can withdraw on May 5, numbers 4 and 5 on May 6, numbers 6 and 7 on May 8 and numbers 8 and 9 on May 11.

However, after May 11, Jan Dhan account holders can withdraw the amount at any day when the bank remains open as per their convenience.

After May 11, the beneficiaries can withdraw money at any bank any day at their convenience.

This plan was implemented by the department of financial services in April in which the government has released the first instalment of relief.

The idea behind this staggered plan is to ensure that there is no rush of beneficiaries who might gather in a large number to take out money due to financial difficulties imposed by Covid-19 outbreak.

It is one of the several financial measures taken by the government to help the poor section of the society under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan package. A sum of Rs 500 per month, for the next three months, is being deposited into the accounts of women Jan Dhan Yojana account holders.

The release of the second instalment to the banks for May was announced through a tweet by banking secretary Debasish Panda.

Panda urged people that the amount is completely safe and people should avoid crowding at banks and follow the time table for withdrawal.

There was a fear that in the absence of a staggered plan there would be rush and crowding at bank branches which would threaten the social distancing norms being practised to fight the deadly virus.
The beneficiaries are encouraged to use neighbourhood ATMs, bank Mitras for making cash withdrawals up to Rs 2,000 to avoid any crowd at the branches. At present there are no charges for withdrawing money from any bank's ATM.
