Mumbai:   HDFC Bank is set to get its new chief executive as the Reserve Bank has confirmed the name of Sashidhar Jagdishan for the position. Sashidhar Jagdishan will now succeed Aditya Puri who has been heading the largest private lender. Puri turned the face of the bank over a period of almost 25 years in which it became the second-largest by assets and also the most valued lender by investors.

The appointment of Sashidhar Jagdishan in the post has been confirmed, according to the news agency PTI sources.

Here is more about the banker who will succeed Aditya Puri after he retires on October 20.

  • Sashidhar Jagdishan has been associated with the bank since 1996 and presently in charge of the bank as Additional Director and Head of Finance, HR.

  • In 2008,  he was appointed as Chief Financial Officer but replaced by Srinivasan Vaidyanathan in 2019.

  • His appointment has grabbed the attention of the industry which has been closely watching the successions·

  • This has turned out to be one of the most successful successions in the industry with Puri supporting the internal candidatures, and hinting at Sashidhar Jagdishan while assuring shareholders that the candidate has "learnt very well".

  • Jagdishan has been associated with the bank for nearly three decades. He is a chartered accountant by profession and joined the bank as a Manager in the finance function, and then went on to become Business Head - Finance in 1999.

  • Jagdishan also served as the Group Head of Finance, Human Resources, Legal & Secretarial, Administration, Infrastructure, Corporate Communications, and Corporate Social Responsibility.

  • The veteran banker is a science graduate and holds a Master's degree in Economics of Money, Banking & Finance.

  • He has played a critical role in supporting the growth trajectory of the bank. He has led the finance function and played a pivotal role in aligning the organisation in achieving the strategic objectives over the years.


The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which was given a list of candidates in an order of priority, conveyed its approval to Jagdishan's name late last evening, the sources said. The bank will eventually inform the exchanges about the RBI nod.
