New Delhi: The COVID-19 outbreak has been profitable for the Houseparty app as, since the last week, the app has reported two million downloads.
The app allows the users to video chat while also playing online games with people you're speaking to has become a household name. The Houseparty app is specifically popular among the new generation as it provides them a platform to connect and also play games.
But recently information circulated on twitter that the app is hacking into spotify, snapchat, and even online banking. A handful of suspicious claims about the Houseparty app started to erupt on Twitter with users saying that there had been attempted “hacks” on other apps after they downloaded Houseparty app. The rumor came into light with one tweet which was later deleted where the user claimed that the Houseparty app tried to log into her Spotify account.
Although Houseparty was prompt in denying to the false claims , posting on their official Twitter account this evening that “All Houseparty accounts are safe – the service is secure, has never been compromised, and doesn’t collect passwords for other sites.” It also seems unlikely that an app owned by Epic Games, a gaming company worth over $15bn now most famous for owning the global gaming phenomenon Fortnite, would try to gain information by unsuccessfully logging into teenagers’ Spotify accounts.
The company believes the smears are targeted, and they're offering $1m to whoever can find out who's behind them.
This morning, Houseparty tweeted: “We are investigating indications that the recent hacking rumors were spread by a paid commercial smear campaign to harm Houseparty. We are offering a $1,000,000 bounty for the first individual to provide proof of such a campaign to bounty@houseparty.com.”
The Houseparty app that came out back in 2015 and was bought by Epic Games – famous for Unreal and Fortnite – in the middle of 2019.
