West Bengal Elections 2021: Taking umbrage at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “clean bowled” remarks directed at the Trinamool Congress (TMC), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday lashed out at the former stating she is “sad and shamed” to see a Prime Minister who “crosses the line while speaking”.

The TMC supremo hit out at Prime Minister Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for blaming her for the violence outside a polling station in Sitalkuchi segment of Cooch Behar during voting for the fourth phase.

“I am really sad and ashamed, I haven't seen this kind of PM who crosses the line while speaking. I have worked for all religions. What have I not done? Now only one thing is left, ‘BJP hatao, desh bachao’. Left and Congress are BJP agents,” Banerjee said.

“I am asking Saugata da (TMC MP Saugata Roy) - in a Private Bill add this Bill as well against those, who speak about firing and shooting,” she added while speaking during a public meeting in Dum Dum.

The TMC supremo accused Prime Minister Modi of stoking violence in Bangladesh following his official visit to the country and reiterated her earlier accusation that the visit was aimed at influencing the voters in certain constituencies of West Bengal.

“You went to Bangladesh for votes and now there is violence. Why is the EC not taking suo moto cognizance? (Prime Minister) Modi ji, you went to (meet former US President) Trump to play the trump card and now to Bangladesh to play the Bengal card,” Banerjee said.

“I request the Election Commission with folded hands - don't listen only to the BJP, listen to all. Don't be partial,” she added.

The Chief Minister also took potshots at Prime Minister Modi over what she alleged “privatisation” that is destroying the Indian economy.

“They are selling Railways, BSNL, banks. Some are saying that more people will be shot at. It doesn't look good in politics, learn to control your tongue. I am ashamed that they live in Bengal. These kinds of leaders need to be put in jail and removed from politics,” she said.

The TMC chief’s outburst came as Prime Minister Modi while drawing a cricket analogy earlier in the day said the people have hit so many fours and sixes in the first four phases of the assembly polls that the BJP has already completed its century and the ruling party in West Bengal is on course to being wiped out.

“The people of Bengal hit so many fours and sixes that BJP has already completed a century (of seats) in the first four phases of assembly polls. They have wiped out the TMC in half the match…The people of Bengal have clean bowled Didi in Nandigram and have asked her entire team to leave the field,” he told an election rally in Bardhaman.

Meanwhile, campaigning is on in full swing for the fifth phase of the assembly elections on April 17. Over 78 percent voter turnout was recorded in the fourth phase of the assembly elections.

West Bengal is voting in eight phases this time. The results will be declared on May 2.
