The 9th edition of the World Ducati Week was record breaking, with more than 81,000 event attendants coming from 66 countries. There were more than 120 activities held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli of Italy during the event. However, the most exciting and anticipated events were the launch of the limited edition Ducati 1299 Panigale S Anniversario and the closed room preview of a 2017 model. Yes, a closed room preview similar to what Ducati did in 2014 for the first teaser of the Scrambler. But things didn't go as expected by the company, and thus the upcoming 2017 Ducati SuperSport S is now out in the open.
Yes, the Ducati SuperSport is coming back as an homage to the name that came almost 40 years before it. Although the upcoming Ducati SuperSport S looks pretty similar to the Panigale range, the trellis frame hints that it is based off the Monster platform. Looking at the elements like a single-sided swingarm, lower-spec Brembo callipers and Öhlins suspension, it seems like the Monster 1200's chassis. However, rumours in Misano states that it could be powered by a 937cc engine, probably the same unit that propels the Hypermotard 939.
There is another speculation that the company is reviving the idea of a Ducati 900 SuperSport SS with this new machine. Unlike its name, this more than a decade-old motorcycle was one of the original sport tourers from Europe. So, the upcoming Ducati SuperSport S could get comfortable ergonomics, a punchy engine and sophisticated technology, all the aspects which can make it much different from the Panigale range. Now, we can just wait for the INTERMOT in October or the EICMA show in November to get more dope on this 2017 Ducati model.
