A 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine drives the xDrive40i. This engine is rated to produce 340PS of maximum power and 450Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine under the hood of the xDrive30d is also a 3.0-litre, inline-six unit. It makes 265PS and 620Nm. This is the same engine that you’ll find under the hood of the 530d M Sport and X4 xDrive30d M Sport X in India. All engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive setup.

The latest generation of the X5 is based on BMW’s CLAR (cluster architecture) platform which also underpins the 7 Series, 5 Series, X3, X4 and the upcoming X7 SUV. In comparison to the older model, the new X5 is bigger on the outside. Here’s a table comparing their dimensions:

The new X5 follows BMW’s latest design theme on the outside. There’s the large kidney grille upfront like on the X7 and 7 Series facelift. The new grille gets active flaps that are there to improve aerodynamics. The headlamps, which also feature laser lights as an option, gets blue coloured detailing. At the rear, there’s a powered split tailgate.

Like the outside, the interior of the new X5 also takes inspiration from the latest generation of BMWs. It features the Live Cockpit Professional that comes with two 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system.

Some of the other notable features on the X5 include multifunctional seats with massage function, a panoramic sunroof, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system and optional third row of seats.

The new BMW X5 rivals the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90.
