New Delhi: Acting Chief Minster of Manipur, Biren Singh was unanimously elected as the new Chief Minister of the state for the second term after Manipur BJP State Legislature meeting was held in Imphal today.
Earlier on Sunday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju arrived in Imphal for the meeting. Manipur caretaker Chief Minister N Biren Singh and BJP leader Biswajit Singh are also present in the meeting along with other newly-elected BJP MLAs of the state.
“The Legislative party meeting of BJP Manipur is likely to take place at 3 pm on Sunday,” news agency ANI had reported quoting sources.
The BJP had registered its victory on 32 out of 60 Assembly seats of Manipur in the recent polls, followed by National People’s Party which won seven seats, Congress and Naga People’s Front bagged five seats, Kuki People’s Alliance secured two seats while three seats were won by independent candidates.
State BJP leaders Biren Singh who won from Heingang constituency and Biswajit Singh who won from Thongju constituency are being seen as frontrunners for the Chief Minister’s post in the state. Both the leaders visited Delhi on Saturday in two separate flights to meet the party's central leaders, news agency PTI had reported.

Both Biren and Biswajit have denied the rumours doing rounds about them being the CM face of Mainpur.
“I never contested elections for CM or any other post but as a worker of my party. The decision (on CM’s face) will be taken by higher authorities,” ANI reported quoting Biren Singh as saying.
While, Biswajit Singh told media persons in New Delhi that he does not want to comment on reports that he is in the race to become the next Chief Minister of Manipur.
