MG Motor’s upcoming SUV, the Hector is all set to launch in India in May 2019. Before that happens, the company has revealed internet-enabled features and the tablet-like touchscreen infotainment that it will get. Its connected tech features will range from real-time data sharing, multiple connectivity options to convenience features based on internet and AI (artificial intelligence).

The Hector’s infotainment unit is powered by an Android-based OS and just like a smartphone, will get internet access through a 4G cellular connection (5G-ready). It will be provided by Airtel and will be free of cost for a “few” years. It will also get OTA (over the air) updates from MG.

The SUV’s infotainment unit has a customisable home screen with multiple backlights, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and a premium Gaana subscription for music playback. In addition, there will be a message function and file browsing option to scroll through Hector’s 16GB storage space.

Convenience features in the Hector will include a navigation system (supported by TomTom) which provides live traffic alerts, a 360-degree parking camera, AI-enabled voice recognition system that is optimised for understanding Indian accents, TPMS with dedicated controls for media, phone and system alerts from the car.

The connected car will also have an iSMART mobile application which will let users remotely control AC, door lock/unlock, tailgate along with the sunroof. For safety, it will have an E-call feature that can alert emergency contacts if it detects the airbags being deployed. Not only that, MG claims that the app can also scan through the whole car to detect any malfunction.

The Hector will also get a ‘Find My Car’ function which can help locate the car in a parking lot, while geo-fencing will notify the owner on his/her mobile phone if the car crosses a set perimeter. Other feature highlights include dynamic turn indicators with LED DRLs, panoramic sunroof and multi-spoke alloy wheels. The Hector will also be equipped with an auto-dimming IRVM and a 7-inch semi-digital MID (multi-info display) screen.

The MG Hector will be available with two engine options. One will be a 2.0-liter diesel from the Jeep Compass where it delivers 173PS/350Nm. It is likely to be coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The other will be 1.5-liter petrol with 48V mild-hybrid tech, good for 143PS/250Nm, paired to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With its debut planned in May 2019, the MG Hector is likely to bear a starting price tag of Rs 15 lakh. It will compete with the Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass and the upcoming Hyundai Tucson facelift.
