Mahindra has discontinued the Thar DI variant citing high upgradation costs to meet upcoming safety norms. You can still buy the Thar, albeit only with the 2.5-litre CRDe diesel engine. The CRDe variant of the Thar comes with creature comforts like AC and power steering that Mahindra never offered on the DI variant. Also, the CRDe variant makes a lot more power compared to the DI variant.

The 2.5-litre DI engine is used by Mahindra in the Bolero too and it will be upgraded to meet BS6 emission norms. The DI variant of Thar used to come with a RWD setup and it could optionally be had with 4WD too. The CRDe variant only with 4WD as standard.

Having pulled the plug on the DI variant of the hardocre off-roader, Mahindra is phasing out the age-old Thar. The upcoming Signature Edition, which will be sold in limited numbers, will be the last Thar of this generation to be sold in the country. It will get new safety features like ABS, driver airbag and rear parking sensors. The Thar CRDe variant retails at Rs 9.6 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The next generation Thar is expected to make its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo. It has been spied testing numerous times and is expected to feature a new 2.0-litre engine that is being developed by Mahindra.
