New Delhi: Lakshadweep Education department in an order declared that all Sundays as holidays for schools in the islands shifting the holiday from Friday. The schools would be functioning for six days said the education department in a statement, adding, that this order would be effective from 2021-22 academic year.


The Muslim-dominated islands have ended the privilege of having Friday holidays for schools students on the basis of religious grounds.

While changing the weekly holiday to Sunday from Friday for Schools, the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Lakshadweep, released a statement and said: "DIET Lakshadweep has developed Halcyon Heights an aid to happiness curriculum for classes 1 to 5. This will be introduced to these classes during the first period in all days accordingly there will be eight periods for classes 3-5 also from the coming academic year onwards."


According to an India Today report, Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal said that schools were had six days working days with Fridays being holidays for the last six decades. This decision was taken without discussing it with any school bodies or the local MP, he said.


"Such decision is not within the people's mandate. It is a unilateral decision of the administration," Faizal told PTI.


Meanwhile, PP Abbas, Vice President cum Counsellor of the Lakshadweep District Panchayat, wrote to Advisor to Administrator Praful Khoda Patel, requesting to reconsider the Education department order in view of the sentiments of students and parents, reported India Today.
