Irattayar (Idukki): In what may embarrass the grand old party in the run up to the Kerala Assembly elections where campaigning has reached an intense pitch, former Idukki MP Joyce George has stirred a controversy calling Congress leader Rahul Gandhi an “unmarried trouble maker”.

George made this unwarranted remark while addressing an election rally at Irattayar in Kerala’s Idukki district on Monday where he lashed out at the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Gandhi scion in particular.

George, who had won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Idukki as the CPI (M) supported independent candidate, while referring to Gandhi’s visit to a women’s college in Kochi last week for an interaction with the students alleged the former Congress president visits only women’s colleges and asked the girls to be “cautious” while dealing with him.

“Girls never bend down in front of him… he is an unmarried trouble maker,” PTI quoted George as saying.

The Congress leaders in Kerala went ballistic over George’s diatribe against Gandhi with Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala dubbing his remarks to be “unfortunate and unacceptable”. He also demanded George’s arrest while categorically stating that a case should be registered against the former Idukki MP.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, however, distanced himself from George’s remarks while interacting with the media in Kasaragod on Tuesday stating the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will oppose Gandhi “politically not personally”
