New Delhi: Jeep is all set to enter India with its brand new 2016 Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. After years of teasing and postponing the launch in India for a variety of reasons, Jeep will launch its cars here in late August. Of course, as our keen CarDekho readers will know, the two cars making it to India will be the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler.

Let us start with the iconic Wrangler. Although we first thought that the three-door Wrangler and the five-door Wrangler will both make it to India, Jeep will only launch the latter to make it more practical while still maintaining the heritage butch looks. The only available engine will be a diesel, which will be exclusively mated to an automatic gearbox and a manually operated 4x4 setup that comes with a dedicated low range option.

The more practical Jeep Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, will come in a few variants. The standard car that comes with the diesel engine will get two variants i.e. the entry level ‘Limited’ and the top of the line ‘Summit’. The top of the line model in both the Jeep range in India and the Grand Cherokee range will be the SRT8. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 will come with a petrol powered Hemi V8 and will be available in very limited numbers.

Although this is Jeep’s initial plan for launch, the iconic American car manufacturer also has several other SUVs in its portfolio that it will launch in the next few years. The first will be the replacement for the Jeep Compass, which is currently codenamed C-SUV. The next one will be the Jeep Renegade that we recently had the chance to drive both on and off-road in Moab, America. Both these cars will be made in India at FCA’s Ranjangaon plant and are expected to take the fight to the Mahindra XUV500 and the Audi Q3 segments respectively.
