The number of Covid-19 cases in the country mounted from seven lakh to eight lakh in just three days with more than 20,000 infections reported every day since July 1.
According to the health ministry, 19,873 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours pushing the number of recovered people to 515,385 and the recovery rate to 62.78%.
“The improvement in recovery rate is the result of a combination of preemptive, proactive, and graded steps taken by the Centre in collaboration with the States/UTs,” the government said in a release on Friday.
The Worst Affected
Most of the infections have been reported from Maharashtra, which has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country with 238,461, followed by Tamil Nadu with 130,261 and Delhi with 109,140.
With 7,862 new cases, Maharashtra on Friday witnessed its highest-ever single-day record in fresh Covid-19 infections, taking the state burden to 2.38 lakh. Mumbai with 1,337 new cases has till now reported 90,461 infections. With 226 deaths registered on Friday, the toll in the state stands at 9,893. In Mumbai, which saw 73 more people succumbing to the virus, the toll is 5,205.

To break the chain of transmission amid an “alarming” rate of spread of Covid-19 cases, the Pune district administration has announced a 10-day lockdown in the municipal limits of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and some adjoining areas from July 14 to July 23. With Covid-19 cases also continuing to rise in Thane despite it being under lockdown, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) too extended the restrictions till July 19. TMC had earlier announced a lockdown from July 2 to July 12.
Other states such as Gujarat with 40,069 infections, Uttar Pradesh with 33,700 cases, and Karnataka with 33, 418 patients of the viral disease has also added to the country’s caseload.
Global Status
Globally, there are more than 12 million infections and 559,622 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University’s coronavirus tracker.
The United States remained the worst affected country as it recorded at least 62,500 new Covid-19 cases on Friday in a record daily increase for the third consecutive day.
Brazil registered 45,048 additional cases of the novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours taking its tally to 1,800,827. While in Japan, the threat of the second wave of Covid-19 loomed as Tokyo detected 243 new cases of the coronavirus, surpassing 200 for the second day in a row and setting a new record.
