Kolkata: After much anticipation and speculation, actor and former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Mithun Chakraborty has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday

In a significant addition to BJP, Mithun Chakraborthy joined the saffron party at Kolkata’s Brigade Ground in presence of West Bengal Party President Dilip Ghosh and National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya.

On Saturday, the General Secretary and Central Observer for West Bengal had met the actor at the latter's residence in Belgachia. Former All India Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Dinesh Trivedi has also joined BJP in presence of president JP Nadda yesterday.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat had last month met Mithun Chakraborty. The meeting had set rumour mills agog that the actor may join the BJP, which is making a desperate bid to trounce the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal electoral battle.

"I am not 'Jol Dhora', I am not 'Bele Bora', I am a pure cobra. You will be finished in one bite. Now, remember the new slogan -- Ek chhobole chhobi," Mithun Chakraborty said after joining BJP in Kolkata.

The actor was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by West Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee in 2014. Mithun Chakraborty, however, resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP on December 26, 2016.

Mithun Chakraborty joining BJP is yet another significant step by the saffron party as it attempts to dethrone CM Mamata Banerjee let TMC government in the state amid the fierce 'Battle For Bengal' in the upcoming 8-phase assembly polls.
