Tamil Nadu continues to recieve heavy rainfall on the second day of Friday with normal life affected in the districts of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued rainfall alert to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The Thoothukudi district administration issued flood warning to the residents of Srivaikuntam and Eral areas due to overflow of Thamirabarani River. They also requested people of low-lying areas to shift to safer places.
In Dindigul, Periyadurai Canal breached due to incessant rain and flooded the nearby areas. The Forest Department banned bathing for tourists at Kumbakkarai Falls, which has been inundated by heavy rains.
Tenkasi is witnessing flood-like conditions with traffic severely disrupted on the Kadaiyam-Pottalpudur road. Rainwater has also entered Sankaranarayana temple in Sankarankoil, while a Primary Health Centre in Vadakarai was submerged.
In Chennai, the Public Works Department (PWD) has issued the first flood warning for areas near Redhills and Chembarambakkam reservoirs. Water levels in these key reservoirs have risen alarmingly due to heavy rains in their catchment areas.
In Maduranthakam, police and locals towed a private bus stranded in floodwaters to safety in Chengalpattu district. In Tirunelveli, a house collapsed in Suthamalli after the overnight rain.
For Friday, the IMD forecasts heavy rain in districts at one or two places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Kanyakumari districts of Tamilnadu. It has also issued for Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal area.
Meanwhile, the rescue teams are completely equipped in case help is required for the affected regions.
